Retail & Customer Service
As a Retail Buyer you are responsible for selecting, negotiating, and purchasing the product ranges that appear on shop floors or online stores across Ireland. You analyse sales data, monitor consumer trends, and work closely with suppliers to secure competitive pricing and favourable contract terms. Your day-to-day work involves attending trade fairs, reviewing product samples, managing budgets, and collaborating with merchandising, marketing, and logistics teams to ensure the right products reach customers at the right time. Employers range from large Irish retailers such as Dunnes Stores, Musgrave Group, and Primark (Penneys) to independent chains, buying offices, and wholesale distributors.
Listen: a day as a Retail Buyer
You arrive at the buying office in Dublin city centre at 8:15 a.m., grab a coffee, and open your laptop. Your first task is reviewing last week's sales reports pulled from the EPOS system — the electronic point-of-sale data that tracks exactly what's selling, what's sitting on shelves, and what's been marked down. A line of women's knitwear is underperforming, and you flag it for discussion later. By 9:00 a.m. you're in a team meeting with merchandising and logistics colleagues. You run through the intake schedule — the delivery plan showing when stock arrives at the distribution centre — and raise a concern about a delayed shipment from a Portuguese supplier. You agree to chase the supplier representative directly before lunch.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
Leaving Certificate subjects such as Business, Economics, Mathematics, and Accounting provide a strong foundation for this role. Most Retail Buyers hold a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Business, Retail Management, Marketing, or Supply Chain Management from institutions such as TU Dublin, ATU, SETU, or UCD. A PLC course in Retail Management or Business at Level 5 or 6 can serve as an alternative entry route into the industry, with progression to a degree possible through the CAO or linked Higher Education pathways. A postgraduate qualification in Procurement, Supply Chain, or Business Analytics (Level 9) is increasingly valued by larger retailers for senior buying roles. Professional membership of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) is recognised by many Irish employers and can be pursued alongside work experience.
Many Retail Buyers begin their careers as Buying Assistants or Merchandise Assistants, gaining experience in stock management, supplier administration, and data reporting. With a few years of proven performance they typically progress to Assistant Buyer and then Buyer, taking full ownership of defined product categories. Senior Buyers and Buying Managers oversee multiple categories and lead small teams, often working with international supply chains. At director level, professionals may move into Head of Buying or Commercial Director roles, shaping the overall product and trading strategy for a retail organisation.
AI-powered demand forecasting and assortment planning tools are increasingly being adopted by large Irish retailers, automating some of the routine data analysis that buyers previously performed manually. Machine learning platforms can process vast amounts of sales and trend data far faster than a human, meaning buyers must shift their focus toward supplier strategy, relationship management, and creative range building. AI also supports dynamic pricing and stock replenishment decisions, reducing administrative burden and allowing buyers to concentrate on higher-value commercial judgement. Rather than replacing buyers, these tools are reshaping the role toward more strategic and relationship-driven work.
