As a Building Services Engineer you design, specify and oversee the installation of the mechanical and electrical systems that make buildings function safely and comfortably — heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, drainage, lighting and fire protection. You work on projects ranging from housing developments and hospitals to office blocks and the large data centres that are increasingly prominent across Ireland. Day to day you produce detailed engineering drawings and calculations, liaise with architects, structural engineers and contractors, and visit sites to ensure installations meet specifications and building regulations. You may also be involved in energy audits and retrofit projects, helping existing buildings reduce their carbon footprint in line with Ireland's climate action targets.
Listen: a day as a Building Services Engineer
You arrive at the office in Dublin at half eight. Before you even take your coat off, there are two emails from a mechanical contractor on a data centre project in Kildare asking for clarification on the chilled-water pipe sizing you specified last week. You pull up the calculations in your engineering software, check the flow rates against the revised cooling load figures the client sent on Friday, and fire back a clear written response by nine o'clock. The morning is mostly desk work. You spend two hours updating a set of mechanical services drawings in AutoCAD MEP — MEP stands for mechanical, electrical and plumbing. You are coordinating ductwork routes for a new hospital wing with the structural engineer's steel drawings to make sure nothing clashes. Clash detection sounds straightforward, but on a complex building like this it means going through the 3D model screen by screen.
A strong Leaving Certificate with Higher Level Maths and Physics is the typical starting point, as most routes into Building Services Engineering require an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree. Relevant degree programmes — accredited by Engineers Ireland — include Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or Architectural Engineering, offered at institutions such as TU Dublin, UCD, University of Galway, UCC and the other technological universities. Some students enter via a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree and progress to Level 8 through a linked add-on year. Graduates who wish to achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status must accumulate several years of professional experience and complete the Engineers Ireland chartered assessment process. There is no statutory regulator requiring registration to practise, but Chartered Engineer status is widely sought by employers and is often required for senior roles on large public-sector and infrastructure projects.
Most graduates begin as junior or graduate Building Services Engineers in a consulting engineering practice or a large mechanical and electrical contractor, typically spending the first two to three years building project experience across different building types. With a few years of practice, progression to engineer or project engineer level brings responsibility for leading designs and managing client relationships. Senior and associate roles follow for those who achieve Chartered Engineer status through Engineers Ireland and demonstrate consistent delivery of complex projects. At the top of the profession, engineers may become directors of engineering consultancies, head of facilities for large organisations, or independent specialist consultants.
AI-powered energy simulation tools are making it faster to model and optimise HVAC systems, reducing the time spent on iterative design calculations. Generative design software can produce multiple compliant system layouts automatically, shifting the engineer's role towards evaluation and decision-making rather than manual drafting. AI-driven building management systems can self-optimise heating and cooling in real time, increasing the importance of engineers who understand both the physical systems and the data they generate. Overall, AI is likely to enhance productivity and enable more ambitious sustainable designs rather than reduce the number of qualified engineers needed.
