What will you learn?

Building Services Engineering focuses on the mechanical, electrical, and energy systems that make buildings function safely and efficiently. You study heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical installations, plumbing, lighting design, fire protection, and building energy management. Practical laboratory sessions, computer-aided design (CAD/BIM) workshops, and an industry placement semester give you hands-on experience with real building systems. There is strong emphasis on sustainable design, energy retrofitting of existing buildings, and the engineering of high-demand environments such as data centres. A typical week involves lectures, design studio sessions, site visits, and software-based energy modelling work.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate that typically includes passes in Mathematics and a science subject; Higher Level Mathematics is strongly advantageous and often required for the Honours degree programme. English and Irish at Ordinary Level are standard minimum requirements. CAO points for this course are generally moderate, reflecting its technical focus and strong employment prospects. Applicants holding a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 award in Engineering, Construction, or a related area can apply through the FET/PLC progression route and may be eligible for reserved places. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply directly to TU Dublin or MTU without standard Leaving Certificate results and are assessed on relevant work experience. HEAR and DARE schemes are available for applicants with socio-economic disadvantage or disabilities.

Career Prospects

Demand for building services engineers in Ireland is strong and growing, driven by ambitious national retrofitting targets under the Climate Action Plan, large-scale data centre construction, and a booming construction sector. Graduates with BIM and energy modelling skills are particularly sought after by employers. The CIBSE and Engineers Ireland accreditation of these programmes means graduates can work towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status, significantly enhancing long-term career prospects. Starting salaries for graduate engineers in this field typically range from approximately €32,000 to €42,000 per year, rising considerably with experience and chartership.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and machine learning tools are increasingly used in building energy management systems to optimise HVAC performance, predict maintenance needs, and reduce energy consumption in real time. As a student and future engineer, you will work with smart building technologies and AI-assisted energy modelling software that automate routine analysis tasks. AI is unlikely to replace the core engineering judgement, site-based decision-making, or client-facing work that defines this profession, but it will change how engineers interact with building data. Staying familiar with emerging digital tools will be an important part of your continuing professional development.
