Mechanical Engineering at honours degree level teaches you how to design, analyse, and manufacture physical systems — from engines and turbines to biomedical devices and renewable energy components. You study the fundamental principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and materials science, applying them through laboratory work, computer-aided design (CAD), and simulation software. Many programmes include group design projects where you solve real engineering challenges alongside classmates. At UL, an eight-month Cooperative Education placement in industry is a central part of the programme, giving you paid, professional experience before you graduate. Erasmus exchange opportunities are available in some institutions. A typical week involves lectures, tutorials, lab sessions, and project work across a broad range of engineering disciplines.

Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a Leaving Certificate with at least six subjects, including Mathematics at Higher level — this is a firm requirement in most institutions. Higher-level Physics is strongly recommended and sometimes required, while Chemistry or Engineering can also strengthen your application. CAO points for accredited programmes at universities such as UL, UCD, and TCD are generally high and competitive. If you do not meet Leaving Certificate requirements directly, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET award can provide a progression route into the degree, particularly at technological universities. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature student pathway and may be required to sit an aptitude or interview assessment. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible applicants with socioeconomic or disability circumstances.
Mechanical engineering graduates are consistently in demand in Ireland, supported by a large multinational manufacturing base and growing investment in renewable energy infrastructure. Engineers Ireland accreditation means your degree is recognised nationally and internationally, which is important if you plan to work abroad or seek chartered engineer status. Graduate salaries typically start in the region of €35,000–€42,000 and rise significantly with experience, specialisation, and chartered status. The transition to green energy systems and advanced manufacturing is creating new roles and expanding the profession.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly used in mechanical engineering for predictive maintenance, generative design, and process optimisation — tools you are likely to encounter during your studies and placement. AI-driven simulation software is beginning to complement and speed up traditional finite element analysis and fluid dynamics modelling. However, physical problem-solving, hands-on manufacturing knowledge, and site-based engineering judgement remain firmly human responsibilities. Mechanical engineers who develop competence with AI-assisted design tools will be well placed in the evolving job market.
29 CAO courses lead to this qualification. Points shown are last year's Round 1 score.
