What does a Decontamination Operative do?

As a Decontamination Operative you are responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilising surgical instruments, medical equipment, and contaminated environments to ensure they are safe for reuse or disposal. In hospital sterile services departments you work closely with theatre nurses, surgeons, and infection control teams to process equipment in strict accordance with HSE protocols and health and safety legislation. You may also work on environmental or industrial sites, removing hazardous materials such as contaminated soil, radioactive substances, or biological waste in compliance with safety regulations. Your daily duties involve assessing the level of contamination, selecting and applying appropriate decontamination techniques, using specialised personal protective equipment (PPE), and accurately documenting every stage of the process. Attention to detail is critical, as errors in decontamination can have serious consequences for patient safety or public health.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Decontamination Operative

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 06:15. You are a Decontamination Operative in the Sterile Services Department of a busy regional hospital. You dress in your own clothes and head in for a 07:00 start, knowing you will change into scrubs and PPE on site before touching anything in the department. By 07:15 you have clocked in, attended a brief handover from the night shift, and pulled on your gown, gloves, face shield, and waterproof apron. The department is divided into a dirty side and a clean side, and the first rule you learned on day one is that nothing crosses between them without going through the correct process. You begin on the dirty side, receiving trolleys of used surgical instruments returned from theatre. You check each tray against a worksheet, noting any missing items or visible damage before anything goes into the automated washer-disinfector machines.

Required Education

Entry into this role typically requires a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, and subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Home Economics (Scientific and Social) provide a useful foundation. The most common Irish route is a QQI Level 5 Award in Healthcare Support or a specific Decontamination Technician Programme delivered through Colleges of Further Education or HSE-linked training providers. Some ETBs and Colleges of Further Education offer PLC courses in Health Service Skills that cover relevant hygiene, infection control, and health and safety modules at NFQ Level 5. Apprenticeship or on-the-job training within HSE Sterile Services departments is also a recognised entry pathway, with structured induction and competency sign-off. No formal registration with a statutory body such as CORU is currently required for this role, but compliance with HSE infection prevention standards and relevant health and safety legislation is mandatory. Further professional development, such as a QQI Level 6 award in Decontamination or supervisory health and safety training, can support career progression.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Decontamination Operatives in Ireland begin their career in an HSE hospital sterile services department or with a specialist environmental services contractor, gaining hands-on experience and completing a QQI Level 5 programme. With experience and additional training — such as a QQI Level 6 award or supervisory health and safety qualification — you can progress to a Senior Decontamination Technician or Team Leader role. Further development can lead to positions such as Sterile Services Supervisor or Infection Prevention and Control Support Officer within the HSE. Some experienced operatives move into training, quality assurance, or facilities management roles, particularly in larger hospital groups or environmental remediation companies.

AI Impact on the job

AI and automation are beginning to influence decontamination work, particularly through automated sterilisation equipment, sensor-based contamination monitoring, and digital tracking systems for instrument traceability. These technologies can improve accuracy and reduce human error in routine processing tasks, but the physical handling, inspection, and judgement elements of the role still require a human operative. AI-assisted quality control tools may flag decontamination failures or equipment faults more quickly, supporting safer outcomes. Overall, AI is likely to augment rather than replace this role, with operatives needing to develop comfort with digital record-keeping and automated equipment interfaces.
