As an Early Years Manager you oversee the day-to-day running of a childcare or early education service, such as a crèche, Montessori, or after-school facility, ensuring the setting operates in line with Tusla registration requirements and national quality frameworks such as Síolta and Aistear. You lead a team of early childhood educators, supporting their professional development, managing rotas, and conducting supervision sessions. Your responsibilities also include financial management, budget oversight, liaison with parents and guardians, and ensuring health, safety, and child protection policies are upheld at all times. You work closely with Tusla inspectors, primary school staff, HSE professionals, and community organisations to support children and their families holistically.
Listen: a day as an Early Years Manager
You arrive at the crèche at 7:45 a.m., a quarter of an hour before the doors open to families. Your first job is a quick walk-through of every room, checking fire exits are unobstructed, safety gates are secure, and the nappy-changing stations are stocked. You sign the daily opening checklist and log it in the facility's Tusla compliance folder, which sits in a locked cabinet in your small office off the main corridor. By 8:15 a.m. parents are arriving with toddlers and babies, and you spend twenty minutes on the floor greeting families, noting which children have specific dietary requirements or medical alerts for the day. One parent flags that her son has a new allergy diagnosed over the weekend; you update his individual care plan immediately and brief the room leader before the morning session begins.
Leaving Certificate subjects such as Home Economics, Biology, and subjects demonstrating literacy and numeracy will support your application to relevant courses, though no single subject is strictly required. The most common Irish route is an NFQ Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), offered at institutions such as TU Dublin, ATU, TUS, MTU, and other technological universities. A QQI Level 5 or Level 6 award in Childcare or Early Childhood Education, available through PLC courses at Colleges of Further Education, can provide an alternative entry route into the sector and progression towards a degree. Tusla requires that all managers of registered childcare services hold a minimum qualification recognised on the Government's list of approved ECCE qualifications, so it is important to confirm your award meets this standard. Continuous professional development is expected throughout your career, and many managers progress to an NFQ Level 8 or Level 9 award in Early Childhood Education and Care or related leadership programmes.
Many Early Years Managers begin as childcare assistants or room leaders, building practical experience before taking on management responsibility, often supported by part-time study towards a Level 7 or Level 8 qualification. Progression typically moves from Room Leader or Senior Practitioner through to Deputy Manager before reaching the Manager role in a Tusla-registered service. Experienced managers may go on to manage multiple settings for a large provider organisation, move into roles as Tusla quality development officers, or specialise in training and mentoring through organisations such as Early Childhood Ireland or the Better Start National Early Years Quality Development service. Pursuing an NFQ Level 9 Master's in Early Childhood Education or leadership and management opens further opportunities in policy, research, or third-level education.
AI tools are beginning to assist Early Years Managers with administrative tasks such as scheduling, record-keeping, and generating reports for Tusla inspections, reducing time spent on paperwork. Digital observation and documentation platforms, some incorporating AI-assisted analysis, are being adopted to track children's learning and development against the Aistear framework. However, the fundamentally relational and safeguarding-sensitive nature of early years management means that human judgement, empathy, and face-to-face leadership remain irreplaceable. Managers will increasingly need digital literacy to evaluate and integrate new tools responsibly within their settings.
