What will you learn?

This course prepares you to work professionally with children from birth to six years in a range of early childhood settings such as crèches, Montessori schools, preschools, and after-school services. You will study child development, play-based learning, and how to design and implement learning programmes that support children's wellbeing and growth. Practical placement in a recognised early childhood setting is a central part of the course, typically accounting for several days per week, giving you hands-on experience working directly with young children and their families. You will also explore topics such as special educational needs, Aistear (Ireland's Early Childhood Curriculum Framework), and Síolta (the National Quality Framework). A typical week balances classroom learning with reflective practice and portfolio work alongside your placement hours.

Required Education

Entry to this QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate typically requires a Leaving Certificate, often with a minimum of five passes including English, though individual colleges set their own entry requirements. A QQI Level 5 Certificate in Childcare, Early Learning and Care, or a related area is frequently accepted as an alternative entry route and is a very common pathway. No specific Higher-level Leaving Certificate subjects are required, though good communication skills and a genuine interest in working with children are expected. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) are welcomed and may be admitted on the basis of relevant work or voluntary experience. HEAR and DARE access schemes may apply at some colleges. Garda vetting is mandatory before commencing placement.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Ireland has a sustained shortage of qualified early childhood professionals, and the Government's ongoing investment in the sector through Core Funding and the Together for Better quality framework means job prospects for qualified graduates are strong. Employers increasingly require QQI Level 6 or higher qualifications to meet Tusla regulatory standards, giving this award real practical value in the jobs market. Salaries in the sector have historically been low, but the Employment Regulation Order for Early Years Workers has introduced minimum pay floors, with Room Leaders earning in the region of €28,000–€35,000 gross per year depending on experience and setting. Career progression is increasingly linked to continuous professional development and higher qualifications.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are beginning to appear in administrative functions within early childhood settings, such as digital documentation platforms and learning-journey apps that help educators record and share children's progress with families. However, the core work of an early years educator — nurturing relationships, responsive caregiving, and play-based facilitation — is deeply human and cannot be replicated by AI. You are likely to use digital observation and portfolio tools during your training, but the relational nature of this profession means AI poses little threat to employment in the sector. Staying digitally literate will nonetheless be a useful professional skill.
