What does an Energy Manager do?

As an Energy Manager you coordinate and oversee all aspects of energy use within an organisation, monitoring consumption patterns across buildings, machinery, and operations to identify where savings can be made. You develop and implement energy policies, set reduction targets, and build business cases for investment in energy-efficient technologies such as heat pumps, LED lighting, or renewable energy sources. Working closely with facilities teams, procurement staff, sustainability officers, and senior management, you ensure the organisation meets both its financial goals and its obligations under Irish and EU climate legislation. You also track utility bills, produce detailed reports on energy performance, and advise on heating systems, electricity procurement, and on-site renewable generation. Your role often involves raising awareness among staff and stakeholders, embedding a culture of sustainability throughout the organisation.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Energy Manager

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at your desk in a mid-sized manufacturing facility outside Athlone at half seven. Before the building fills up, you log into the energy monitoring platform — a system called Modbus-linked SCADA that pulls real-time data from electricity, gas, and compressed-air meters throughout the site. Overnight readings show the compressor hall was drawing power at two in the morning when nobody was there. You flag it for investigation and add it to your morning notes. At nine o'clock you join a brief stand-up with the facilities supervisor and the maintenance lead. You share last week's consumption figures against the targets set out in the site's ISO 50001 energy management plan. Electricity use is down three percent on the same week last year, which is encouraging, but gas consumption in the spray-paint area is still running high. You agree that the maintenance team will check the burner calibration this afternoon.

Required Education

Most Energy Managers in Ireland hold an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline such as engineering (mechanical, electrical, or building services), environmental science, or sustainable energy. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geography, and Design & Technology, as strong analytical and technical grounding is essential. Typical CAO programmes include BE/BEng in Energy Systems or Mechanical Engineering at institutions such as TU Dublin, University of Galway, UCC, or UL, as well as BSc programmes in Sustainable Energy or Environmental Management. A postgraduate qualification such as an NFQ Level 9 Masters in Energy Management or Sustainable Development is increasingly common and can accelerate career progression. Relevant professional membership with Engineers Ireland or accreditation under the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) energy auditor scheme strengthens your standing in this field.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many Energy Managers begin their careers in engineering, facilities management, or environmental consultancy roles, gaining practical experience in building services or energy systems before moving into a dedicated energy management position. Within a few years you might progress to Senior Energy Manager or Head of Sustainability, taking responsibility for a larger portfolio of sites or leading a team. In the public sector, opportunities exist with local authorities, the HSE, third-level institutions, and government departments, while the private sector offers roles in manufacturing, data centres, real estate, and utilities. With sufficient experience and a strong track record, some Energy Managers move into directorial roles, sustainability consultancy, or specialist positions within organisations such as SEAI or ESB Networks.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered building management systems and energy monitoring platforms are transforming how Energy Managers work, enabling real-time analysis of consumption data across multiple sites with far greater speed and accuracy than manual methods. Machine learning tools can predict energy demand, optimise heating and cooling systems automatically, and flag anomalies without human intervention, shifting the Energy Manager's focus towards strategic decision-making and stakeholder engagement. While AI handles routine monitoring and reporting tasks, the judgement required to develop policy, manage relationships, negotiate energy contracts, and deliver culture change within organisations remains firmly human. Energy Managers who embrace these tools and develop skills in interpreting AI-generated insights will be well positioned to add greater value.
