What will you learn?

This QQI Level 6 programme gives you practical, hands-on training in all aspects of forest management and timber harvesting operations. You will learn how to plan and carry out thinning, clearfelling, and restocking, as well as how to measure and value standing timber and harvested logs. A large part of your week is spent outdoors on working forests, learning chainsaw operation, harvester and forwarder use, and safe working practices to industry standard. You will study forest ecology, tree species identification, and environmental compliance under Irish and EU regulations. Work placements with Coillte or private forestry contractors give you real commercial experience, and some programmes include modules in forest road design and GIS mapping.

Required Education

Entry to this programme typically requires a Leaving Certificate with passes in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics, though Ordinary level grades are generally acceptable. Relevant Junior Cycle or Leaving Certificate subjects such as Agricultural Science, Biology, or Geography are useful but rarely compulsory. Applicants who have completed a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture, Forestry, or a related area may apply directly and often receive priority consideration. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may be admitted on the basis of relevant work experience in forestry, farming, or construction without meeting standard Leaving Cert requirements. HEAR and DARE access routes are available at participating ETB colleges for students from disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities. A valid safe pass, a clean medical fitness declaration, and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions are typically expected before starting.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Demand for skilled forestry operatives and supervisors in Ireland is strong, driven by ambitious Government afforestation targets and the expanding biomass and timber-processing industries. Ireland has a significant skills shortage at operative and technician level, meaning graduates with recognised chainsaw and harvester tickets are well positioned to find work quickly. Starting salaries for forestry operatives typically range from around €28,000 to €35,000 gross per year, with experienced harvesting supervisors and contractors earning considerably more. The sector offers genuine opportunities for self-employment and business growth as private forestry landholding continues to increase.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and precision forestry technologies are beginning to influence the sector, with drone-based canopy mapping, LiDAR inventory tools, and harvester on-board computer systems becoming more common on Irish operations. These tools are used to improve timber yield estimates, plan extraction routes, and monitor environmental compliance, and familiarity with them will become an increasing advantage for graduates. However, the core practical skills of chainsaw operation, thinning judgement, and heavy machine handling remain very much human-led and are not at risk of automation in the near term. Staying current with digital forest management platforms and GIS tools will complement rather than replace your hands-on competencies.

How to apply

Applications for QQI Level 6 Forestry Operations programmes are made directly to the relevant ETB college or Teagasc training centre — not through the CAO. Some programmes may also be accessed via fetchcourses.ie, the national FET opportunities portal, and entry typically requires a QQI Level 5 in Forestry, Agriculture, or a related area, or relevant industry experience.
