What will you learn?

As a motor mechanic apprentice, you develop the skills to diagnose, service, and repair cars, vans, and light commercial vehicles. The programme covers engine systems, electrical and electronic diagnostics, braking, suspension, steering, and exhaust systems, as well as modern hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) technology. Your training alternates between on-the-job learning at a registered employer — typically a franchised dealership or independent garage — and off-the-job phases at an Education and Training Board (ETB) training centre or Institute of Technology campus. A typical week on-site involves working alongside qualified technicians, carrying out scheduled servicing, fault-finding using diagnostic equipment, and completing logbook evidence for your assessor. The programme runs over approximately four years and leads to an NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Motor Mechanics.

Required Education

Entry to the Motor Mechanics Apprenticeship requires you to first secure a position with a SOLAS-registered employer, such as a franchised dealership, main agent, or approved garage. You generally need to have completed your Junior Cycle, and most employers expect a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, though there is no fixed points requirement. Relevant Leaving Certificate subjects such as Engineering, Technical Graphics, Physics, and Maths are advantageous and demonstrate practical aptitude. You must be at least 16 years of age at the start of the apprenticeship and meet any employer-specific requirements, which may include a full or provisional driving licence. Mature applicants and career changers are welcome; previous relevant work experience in a mechanical or technical role can strengthen your application to an employer. Apprenticeship Ireland (apprenticeship.ie) and local ETBs can help you find registered employers and guide you through the registration process with SOLAS.

Career Prospects

The outlook for qualified motor mechanics in Ireland is strong, driven by an ageing vehicle fleet, increasing vehicle complexity, and the rapid transition to hybrid and electric vehicles. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) consistently reports a shortage of qualified technicians, meaning job security for competent graduates is high. Salaries for newly qualified mechanics typically range from around €30,000 to €38,000 gross per year, with experienced diagnostic technicians and workshop foremen earning €42,000 to €55,000 or more. Progression to self-employment or running your own garage is also a realistic long-term goal.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is increasingly embedded in vehicle diagnostics, with modern scan tools and dealer-specific software using AI-assisted fault analysis to speed up troubleshooting. This means technicians need strong digital literacy alongside their mechanical skills to interpret and act on AI-generated diagnostic reports. However, the hands-on physical work of repairing, replacing, and testing vehicle components cannot be automated, keeping the core of the role very much human. Staying current with manufacturer training and software updates will be an ongoing part of working in this field.

How to apply

This is an employer-led, SOLAS-registered apprenticeship: you must first secure employment with a registered motor dealer or garage employer, who then registers you with SOLAS. Off-the-job training phases (typically 4 phases over approximately 4 years) are delivered at designated ETB Training Centres nationwide; there is no CAO application.
