Creative & Media
As a Producer you oversee the creative, logistical, and financial aspects of bringing a media project to life, whether that is a music album, film, television programme, radio show, or digital content series. You work closely with directors, writers, artists, performers, engineers, and commissioning editors to shape a project from initial concept through to final delivery. On any given day you might be negotiating contracts with talent, reviewing budgets, sitting in on recording or editing sessions, or pitching ideas to broadcasters and financiers. In Ireland you may work for organisations such as RTÉ, TG4, or Lyric FM, for independent production companies, or as a freelance producer supported through bodies like Screen Ireland. Managing deadlines, resolving creative differences, and ensuring the finished product meets both artistic and commercial expectations are central to the role.
Listen: a day as a Producer
You arrive at the production company's open-plan office in Dublin at 8:30 on a Tuesday morning. Before your coat is off, you check your email for overnight notes from a post-production house in Cork that has been grading the final cut of a six-part documentary series commissioned by TG4. There are three pages of technical queries about colour temperature in two interview sequences. You flag them for the editor and make a note to call the post-production supervisor after lunch. By nine o'clock you are in a budget review meeting with your line producer and the company's financial controller. The shoot wrapped last month but costs are still coming in, and you are trying to reconcile the actual spend against the budget you submitted to Screen Ireland when you drew down your production funding. One location invoice is significantly higher than the agreed figure, and you need to resolve it before the next funding report is due.

icould career stories
Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
A relevant NFQ Level 7 or Level 8 degree is the most common route into producing, with useful programmes including BA in Film and Television Production, BA in Music Technology, BA in Media Production, or a BSc in Sound Engineering, available at institutions such as TU Dublin, IADT, DCU, UL, ATU, and Griffith College. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Music, English, Business, Art, and Mathematics. A QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC in Music Production, Media Production, or Audio Engineering at a College of Further Education can serve as a stepping stone to a Level 7 or 8 programme or to entry-level industry work. Some producers build their careers through hands-on experience, starting as runners or production assistants and progressing over time. Postgraduate diplomas or master's degrees in Film Producing, Screen Production, or Music Business at Level 9 are increasingly valued for those wishing to move into higher-budget productions or senior roles. No single statutory registration body governs producing, but membership of industry bodies such as the Irish Film and Television Network (IFTN) or the Music and Entertainment Association of Ireland (MEAI) supports professional development.
Many producers begin in junior or assistant roles — as a runner, production assistant, or studio assistant — gaining practical experience across different types of productions. With a few years of experience and a portfolio of completed projects, you might progress to associate producer or line producer before taking on full producing credits. In music, early career producers often work independently with emerging artists, building a reputation that attracts more established acts and labels. Senior producers in Ireland may oversee multiple projects simultaneously, manage production companies, or move into executive producing or commissioning roles at broadcasters such as RTÉ or TG4.
AI tools are transforming aspects of the producer's workflow, particularly in music production where AI-assisted composition, vocal tuning, and mastering software can accelerate the creation process and reduce costs. In film and television, AI is being used for script analysis, automated editing assistance, and audience trend forecasting, helping producers make more informed commissioning decisions. However, the core responsibilities of a producer — creative judgement, relationship management, financial oversight, and leadership — remain distinctly human skills that AI cannot replicate. Producers who embrace AI tools as part of their toolkit while focusing on the strategic and creative dimensions of their work are likely to have a strong advantage in the evolving industry.
