As a Restaurant Host you are the first point of contact for guests arriving at a restaurant, hotel dining room or hospitality venue. You manage reservations, greet customers warmly, escort them to their tables and present menus to get their visit off to a great start. You work closely with waiting staff, kitchen teams and managers to ensure the dining room runs smoothly, tables are correctly set and any special seating requirements are met. You also handle customer enquiries, manage waiting lists during busy periods and assist guests at departure, ensuring every visitor leaves with a positive impression.
Listen: a day as a Restaurant Host
Your shift starts at 11:30 on a busy Friday lunchtime in a mid-sized Dublin city-centre restaurant. You arrive fifteen minutes early, check the reservation book on the OpenTable system, and count confirmed covers for the afternoon. You note two birthday parties, a table requesting a highchair and one guest who has flagged a severe nut allergy. You print the floor plan, mark which tables are assigned to which server, and walk the dining room to make sure every setting is straight, glassware is polished and menus are clean and presentable. By noon the first guests begin arriving. You stand at the host stand near the entrance, greet each party with a genuine welcome, confirm their booking and lead them to their table. You hand over menus, mention the daily specials and ensure the server knows the nut allergy before stepping away. During the next hour and a half the room fills quickly and a short waiting list builds at the door. You give realistic wait times, offer to take phone numbers and keep people updated.
There are no mandatory formal qualifications to become a Restaurant Host in Ireland, and most people enter the role directly through on-the-job training. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Home Economics, Business and a modern language can be useful for understanding hospitality environments and communicating with a diverse clientele. A QQI Level 5 Certificate in Hospitality Skills or a related FET programme offered through a College of Further Education or an ETB provides a solid foundation and may improve your prospects. Short courses in food safety and hygiene, such as those leading to a HACCP certificate, are commonly expected by employers and are widely available across Ireland. No statutory professional registration is required for this role.
Most Restaurant Hosts begin in entry-level front-of-house roles in restaurants, hotels or event venues, gaining practical experience in guest relations and dining room operations. With time and demonstrated reliability, you may progress to a Senior Host, Floor Supervisor or Front-of-House Manager position. Further progression can lead to Food and Beverage Manager or Restaurant Manager roles, particularly if you undertake additional qualifications such as a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate or a Level 7/8 degree in Hospitality Management. Ireland's thriving hospitality sector, especially in Dublin, Cork, Galway and tourist-heavy regions, offers real opportunities to advance within hotel groups, restaurant chains and independent venues.
AI-powered reservation platforms and chatbots are increasingly handling online bookings, confirmations and basic customer queries, reducing some of the administrative load on hosts. However, the core value of a Restaurant Host — providing a warm, human welcome and managing the social dynamics of a busy dining room — is difficult to replicate with technology. AI tools may assist with predictive table management and demand forecasting, helping hosts allocate seating more efficiently during peak periods. Overall, the role is unlikely to be displaced by AI in the near term, but hosts who are comfortable using digital reservation systems and hospitality software will have a clear advantage.
