As a Road Transport Manager you oversee the daily operation of a road transport fleet, ensuring goods or passengers are moved safely, efficiently and in compliance with Irish and EU regulations. You plan vehicle schedules and routes, monitor driver hours using tachograph records, manage maintenance programmes and liaise with customers, suppliers and haulage partners. You analyse transportation costs, set operational targets and produce management reports to help the business perform at its best. You work closely with drivers, warehouse teams, logistics coordinators and, in larger organisations, senior supply-chain management.
Listen: a day as a Road Transport Manager
Your alarm goes off at 05:45. By 06:30 you are at the depot, a busy distribution yard on the outskirts of a regional town. Before the first drivers sign on, you check the transport management system — in your case a software platform that logs vehicle locations, delivery schedules and driver assignments — to confirm the day's runs are properly allocated. Two drivers are already waiting with queries: one has a defect report on a rigid truck, noting a brake light fault picked up during his walkaround check. You note it on the vehicle defect book and contact the fleet maintenance company to arrange a same-day repair, then reassign that driver to a spare vehicle. By 08:00 you have signed off on ten driver debrief sheets from yesterday's runs. Mid-morning is spent at your desk reviewing tachograph data downloaded from the digital cards drivers use to record their working and rest hours. EU drivers' hours regulations set strict limits — no more than nine hours driving in a day in most cases — and you are legally responsible for ensuring compliance. You spot one record that looks close to the limit and flag it with a note for the driver's file. You also take a call from a key customer whose delivery window was missed yesterday due to roadworks on the N7; you apologise, explain the delay and agree a revised schedule.
A Level 7 or Level 8 degree in logistics, supply-chain management, transport management or business is a common route into this role, offered at institutions such as TU Dublin, ATU and TUS. A Level 6 Higher Certificate in logistics or a relevant QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC course can also provide entry, particularly when combined with practical experience. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Business, Mathematics, Geography and Irish are useful preparation. Crucially, anyone responsible for an operator's road-haulage or passenger-transport licence in Ireland must hold a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) for transport managers, awarded by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) following written examinations. Continuing professional development is expected throughout your career to stay current with EU transport regulations, tachograph rules and driver compliance requirements.
Many Road Transport Managers begin their careers as transport coordinators, logistics administrators or drivers, building practical knowledge of fleet operations before taking on supervisory responsibilities. Completing the RSA Transport Manager CPC qualification is a key milestone that formally qualifies you to hold or oversee an operator licence. With experience, you can progress to senior transport manager, head of logistics or operations director within a haulage, distribution or passenger-transport company. Some experienced managers move into consultancy, join industry bodies or take on multi-site regional roles with larger national or international logistics operators.
AI-powered route optimisation and real-time traffic analytics are increasingly integrated into transport management systems, reducing manual planning workload and improving fuel efficiency. Predictive maintenance platforms that use vehicle telematics data are helping managers schedule servicing more accurately, cutting unplanned downtime. However, the compliance, people-management and regulatory-judgement aspects of the role remain firmly human responsibilities that AI tools support rather than replace. Road Transport Managers who are comfortable interpreting AI-generated insights and integrating them into decision-making will find their skills in greater demand.
