As a Technical Writer you transform complex technical information into clear, accurate documentation that helps users understand and work with software products, systems, or services. Your daily work involves collaborating with software engineers, product managers, UX designers, and subject-matter experts to gather information and translate it into user manuals, online help content, API documentation, release notes, and white papers. You structure and write content using specialist authoring tools, manage version control of documentation, and ensure all materials meet both user needs and any relevant legal or compliance requirements. You also gather feedback from end users and stakeholders to continually improve the quality and usability of your documentation.
Listen: a day as a Technical Writer
You arrive at your desk in a tech company's Dublin office at half eight, make a coffee, and open Jira to check which documentation tickets have been assigned to you overnight. A software engineer has flagged that a new API endpoint went live yesterday, and someone from the QA team has left a comment asking why the error-code table in the developer guide is missing two entries. You add both to your morning list before joining a nine o'clock stand-up on Microsoft Teams with the product squad. After the stand-up you spend the first solid block of the morning in MadCap Flare, the authoring tool your company uses to produce structured documentation. You are updating a user guide for a cloud-based payroll platform used by Irish and UK businesses. The legal team has sent over a compliance note about changes to PRSI reporting requirements, so you need to revise three topics to reflect the new process before the next software release, which ships in ten days.
A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical entry point for Technical Writing roles in Ireland; relevant subjects include English, Computer Science, Communications, or a cognate discipline available through the CAO at universities such as UCD, DCU, TU Dublin, or University of Galway. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include English, Mathematics, a science or technology subject, and any modern language. Some practitioners enter through a Level 8 degree in a technical field such as engineering or software development and build writing skills through professional development or short courses. Postgraduate conversion programmes and professional development courses in technical communication are also offered through Irish institutions and bodies such as the Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators (ISTC). No statutory registration body governs this profession in Ireland, though membership of professional associations such as ISTC or the Society for Technical Communication (STC) is valued by many employers. Demonstrating a strong writing portfolio is as important as formal qualifications when applying for roles.
Most Technical Writers in Ireland begin in junior or associate roles within software companies or specialist documentation teams, often working under the guidance of a senior writer on defined products or features. With a few years of experience you can progress to a mid-level Technical Writer position, taking ownership of full documentation sets and leading relationships with engineering teams. Senior Technical Writers and Lead Technical Writers manage documentation strategy, mentor junior colleagues, and may take on people management or Head of Documentation roles in larger organisations. Dublin's large concentration of multinational technology companies — including many US tech firms with European headquarters — offers strong progression opportunities and exposure to international documentation standards.
AI writing and content generation tools are changing the day-to-day workflow of Technical Writers, automating first-draft generation, translation, and content tagging tasks that were previously manual. However, Technical Writers are increasingly valued for their ability to critically evaluate AI-generated content for accuracy, tone, legal compliance, and genuine usability — skills that require human judgement. The role is evolving towards one of content strategy, quality assurance, and AI tool management rather than purely writing from scratch. Writers who develop proficiency in prompt engineering, AI output review, and documentation toolchain integration are well positioned in this changing landscape.
