As a Trust and Safety Analyst you review and moderate user-generated content on digital platforms to ensure it complies with community guidelines, legal requirements, and platform policies. Your daily work involves assessing flagged posts, images, videos, and accounts, making decisions about whether content should be removed, restricted, or escalated to senior reviewers or law enforcement. You collaborate closely with policy teams, legal counsel, data analysts, and engineering staff to identify emerging harmful trends and help refine moderation guidelines. Many Trust and Safety Analyst roles in Ireland are based in Dublin, where major technology companies maintain large EMEA operations, and shift patterns are common to provide round-the-clock coverage.
Listen: a day as a Trust and Safety Analyst
You arrive at your company's Dublin city-centre office just before 8:30 a.m., badge in, grab a coffee, and open your workstation. Your team covers Trust and Safety for the platform's EMEA region, so the queue of flagged content has already been building since the early shift handed over. You log into the internal case-management tool, check the priority queue, and read the overnight handover notes left by colleagues in another time zone. By 9:00 a.m. you are working through your assigned cases. Each one presents a piece of user-generated content — a post, an image, a short video, or a reported account — that has either been flagged automatically by the platform's detection system or reported by another user. You assess each item against the platform's community guidelines and relevant Irish and EU legislation, including the EU Digital Services Act, which requires platforms to act on illegal content promptly. You make a decision: leave it up, remove it, restrict its reach, or escalate it.
A specific Leaving Certificate subject combination is not prescribed, though English, Business, and a language are useful given the multilingual nature of many Dublin-based platforms. The typical minimum entry route is a QQI Level 6 Higher Certificate or a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor's degree in areas such as Media, Communications, Law, Psychology, or Information Technology; PLC courses in Media Production or Business at QQI Level 5–6 can also lead to entry-level roles. Some employers accept candidates with a strong Leaving Certificate and relevant work or volunteer experience in community management or content moderation. Degrees at NFQ Level 8 in Law, Digital Media, Computer Science, or Social Sciences from institutions such as TCD, DCU, UCD, or TU Dublin strengthen your candidacy for more senior analytical roles. No statutory registration body governs this occupation, but professional development through industry bodies such as the Trust and Safety Professional Association (TSPA) is increasingly valued.
Most Trust and Safety Analysts begin in entry-level content review roles with Dublin-based technology firms, progressing to Senior Analyst positions as they build expertise in specific content verticals such as child safety, counter-terrorism, or misinformation. From there, you can move into Policy Specialist, Trust and Safety Operations Lead, or Investigations roles, taking on mentoring and quality-assurance responsibilities. With further experience or postgraduate study in Law, Criminology, or Cybersecurity, you could transition into Trust and Safety Management, Government Affairs, or Regulatory Compliance. Some analysts move laterally into related fields such as cybersecurity, legal operations, or digital policy within public bodies or NGOs.
AI and machine learning tools are increasingly used to pre-filter and flag content at scale, reducing the volume of straightforward cases that human analysts must review manually. However, AI systems still struggle with satire, cultural context, and novel forms of harmful content, meaning human judgement remains essential for complex and borderline cases. Trust and Safety Analysts are increasingly expected to evaluate the outputs of AI moderation systems, identify their failure modes, and provide labelled feedback data to improve model performance. This shifts the role towards greater analytical and policy work, increasing its complexity and overall skill requirements over time.
