Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering combines the principles of chemistry, biology, and engineering to design and optimise processes for producing medicines, biologics, and specialty chemicals at industrial scale. You study reaction engineering, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and mass transfer alongside pharmaceutical-specific topics such as Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), drug formulation, and bioreactor design. Laboratory and pilot-plant sessions are central to your week, alongside lectures, tutorials, and project work. A structured industrial placement, typically in third year, places you inside Ireland's world-leading pharma and biopharma companies, where you gain hands-on experience of manufacturing, quality systems, and regulatory compliance. Some programmes offer Erasmus exchange opportunities in Europe.
Entry is through the CAO, and points for this programme are typically high, reflecting strong demand and limited places. You will generally need at least six Leaving Certificate subjects including Higher-Level Mathematics and a laboratory science subject such as Chemistry or Physics; Higher-Level Chemistry is strongly advantageous. English and Irish at Ordinary Level or above are the standard minimum language requirements. If you do not meet direct entry requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET/PLC award in Science or Engineering can provide a progression route into first or second year, subject to individual college criteria. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student pathway, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged or disability backgrounds.
Graduate employment rates in this field are consistently strong, driven by Ireland's status as one of the world's leading pharmaceutical manufacturing hubs. Demand for qualified chemical and pharmaceutical engineers significantly outpaces supply, meaning most graduates secure relevant employment within a short time of finishing their degree. Starting salaries typically range from approximately €38,000 to €50,000 gross per year, rising considerably with experience and chartered status. Chartered Engineer status through Engineers Ireland further enhances long-term career prospects and earning potential.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly being applied to process optimisation, predictive maintenance, and quality control within pharmaceutical manufacturing environments. You will likely encounter digital twin technology and data analytics tools as part of your studies and on placement, reflecting industry's move towards smart manufacturing. AI-assisted process analytical technology (PAT) is becoming standard in GMP environments, and graduates who understand both engineering fundamentals and data-driven tools will be particularly competitive. However, the hands-on, regulatory, and safety-critical nature of pharmaceutical manufacturing means human engineering expertise remains central and irreplaceable.

How to apply
Applications for undergraduate CAO courses are made through the Central Applications Office (cao.ie) by 1 February (normal closing date) or 1 March (late closing date). Leaving Certificate subjects including Mathematics and Chemistry (or Physics) are typically required, with minimum grade thresholds varying by institution.
