This QQI Level 5 programme gives you a broad, hands-on introduction to the construction industry, covering the core skills used across a range of building trades. You will spend a significant portion of your time in workshops and on simulated site environments, learning practical techniques in areas such as carpentry, brickwork, plastering, and general construction. The programme includes Safe Pass certification and manual handling training, which are legal requirements for working on Irish construction sites. A typical week combines classroom sessions on construction science and health and safety with practical workshop time developing trade skills. This course is designed as a solid foundation before you move into a specific apprenticeship or further study.

Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship at ATU
Entry is generally open to applicants who have completed the Junior Cycle or equivalent, though individual ETB colleges may set their own minimum requirements. A Leaving Certificate is not always mandatory, making this accessible to school leavers who did not complete Senior Cycle, as well as adults returning to education. Subjects such as Technical Graphics, Construction Studies, or a science at Junior or Senior Cycle level are useful but rarely compulsory. Mature applicants (23 or over) are welcomed and may be assessed through interview or relevant work experience rather than formal qualifications. Places are allocated by the local ETB college, so you should apply directly to your nearest College of Further Education. Some colleges may ask for a basic aptitude or interest in practical and physical work.
The Irish construction industry is experiencing sustained demand for skilled workers, supported by major government housing targets and infrastructure projects under Project Ireland. Qualified construction operatives and apprentice tradespeople are actively sought by contractors across all 26 counties. Earnings for general construction operatives typically start around €28,000–€35,000 gross per year, rising considerably once you qualify in a specific trade. The combination of a QQI Level 5 award, Safe Pass, and practical site experience makes graduates genuinely employable in a competitive labour market.
AI and digital technology are gradually entering the construction sector through tools such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), drone surveying, and automated scheduling software, but the core physical trade skills taught at this level remain firmly in human hands. At operative and apprentice level, the practical, site-based nature of the work means AI poses a low displacement risk compared with many other industries. You may encounter digital measurement tools, project management apps, and computer-aided design software as part of your working environment. Developing a basic familiarity with these technologies alongside your practical skills will be an advantage as the industry modernises.
