What will you learn?

This course focuses on the practical and technical skills needed to manage a modern dairy herd in Ireland. You study grass-based production systems, milk quality, animal nutrition, herd health, and reproductive management. A significant part of your week is spent on the college farm, carrying out milking, AI procedures, calf rearing, and pasture management under supervision. You also cover farm business planning, sustainability, and compliance with environmental regulations. Many programmes include a supervised off-campus farm placement, giving you hands-on experience in a commercial dairy enterprise. By the end of the course, you will be able to take on a responsible role in the day-to-day running of a dairy farm.

Required Education

Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with passes in at least five subjects, including English or Irish. Agricultural Science, Biology, and Chemistry are useful subjects, though not always compulsory. A QQI Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture or an equivalent Teagasc Green Cert component can also provide entry. Mature applicants with relevant farm experience are welcomed and may be assessed through a personal interview and farm background rather than formal exam results. HEAR and DARE access routes may be available through the ETB or Teagasc directly. Some colleges ask applicants to demonstrate practical farming experience prior to enrolment.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

The Irish dairy industry is one of the most productive grass-based systems in Europe, and demand for qualified herd managers remains strong. Graduates with a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate are well regarded by farmers and agri-businesses seeking skilled employees. Many graduates go on to manage large commercial herds or return to develop the family farm. Salaries for experienced dairy farm managers typically range from approximately €35,000 to €55,000 gross per year, with farm accommodation often included.

Impact of AI on this program

Precision livestock technology and data-driven herd management tools are increasingly common on Irish dairy farms, including automated milking systems, heat detection sensors, and milk analysis software. You will be expected to interpret data from these systems as part of modern herd management. AI-assisted decision support tools are being developed by Teagasc and commercial suppliers to help with breeding decisions and herd health monitoring. While physical farm work cannot be replaced, strong digital literacy and the ability to use these technologies will become an important part of the role.
