What will you learn?

A BA in Drama and Theatre Studies immerses you in the theory, history, and live practice of theatre-making. You explore performance techniques, dramaturgy, directing, stage design, and playwriting alongside critical studies in Irish, European, and global theatre traditions. Practical modules take place in dedicated studio spaces and, through partnerships with companies such as the Abbey Theatre and Druid, you gain real experience of professional rehearsal and production environments. A typical week combines seminars on theatre history or critical theory, practical workshops in movement or voice, and collaborative ensemble rehearsals. Some programmes offer Erasmus exchange placements with European theatre academies, broadening your creative and cultural perspective considerably.

Required Education

Entry is normally through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English, which is essential. Higher Level English is strongly recommended and expected at most institutions offering this course. CAO points are generally moderate to high, reflecting consistent demand for places. If you have not come through the traditional Leaving Cert route, a relevant QQI Level 5 or 6 FET/PLC award in Performing Arts or Creative Media can provide a progression pathway to Level 7 or 8 study. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly to institutions and are typically assessed through interview and portfolio. HEAR and DARE access routes are available at TCD, UCC, and University of Galway for eligible applicants.

Career Prospects

The Irish theatre and performing arts sector has shown resilience, supported by Arts Council funding and a vibrant festival circuit including the Dublin Theatre Festival and Galway International Arts Festival. Graduate employment in the arts is competitive, and many graduates combine portfolio careers across performance, teaching, facilitation, and administration. Graduates with strong technical or administrative skills tend to find more immediate employment opportunities, while performers often build careers gradually. The sector rewards persistence, networking, and versatility.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to influence theatre-making through generative sound design, AI-assisted dramaturgy, and data-driven audience development tools used by larger arts organisations. However, live performance is fundamentally human in nature, and the creative, interpretive, and collaborative skills you develop are difficult to automate. You may find AI tools useful for script analysis, research, or production planning, but the core of the work remains relational and embodied. Awareness of AI's role in digital performance and immersive theatre is increasingly relevant to contemporary practice.
