What will you learn?

This QQI Level 5 programme introduces you to the knowledge and practical skills needed to care for and educate young children from birth to six years. You study child development, play-based learning, safeguarding, and inclusive practice, with a strong focus on Ireland's national curriculum framework, Aistear, and the quality framework Síolta. A significant part of your week is spent on work placement in crèches, preschools, or after-school settings, where you apply theory directly with children under the supervision of qualified practitioners. Modules are delivered through classroom tuition, group projects, and reflective portfolio work. By the end of the course you will have the minimum qualification required by Tusla to work in a registered early learning and care setting in Ireland.

Required Education

Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with passes in at least five subjects, including English at Ordinary level or above. Some colleges accept applicants with a Junior Cycle qualification combined with relevant life or voluntary experience, particularly mature applicants aged 23 or over. There is no CAO points system at this level; you apply directly to the college or through the relevant ETB, and places are allocated on a first-come, first-served or interview basis. QQI Level 4 awards in childcare or community care can also provide a pathway onto this programme. VTOS (Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme) and Back to Education Initiative places may be available for eligible adults. Garda vetting is mandatory before placement begins.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified early years professionals in Ireland remains strong, driven by ongoing Government investment in childcare through schemes such as the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programme and Core Funding. Graduate employment rates in this sector are consistently high, as the regulatory requirement for qualified staff creates a reliable baseline of job openings. Salaries at Level 5 entry start at approximately €27,000–€30,000 gross per year, with room leader or senior practitioner roles typically earning €30,000–€36,000. Ongoing workforce shortages mean graduates with good placement records are often offered roles before they complete their course.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to influence early years practice through digital observation and documentation tools that help practitioners record and assess children's learning journeys more efficiently. However, the fundamentally relational and hands-on nature of early childhood education means that AI cannot replace the nurturing, responsive care that young children require from qualified adults. You are more likely to use AI-assisted administration or planning software than to see it directly enter the classroom at this stage. Staying familiar with digital tools will become increasingly useful for reporting and communication with parents.
