What will you learn?

Electronic and Computer Engineering combines the design of hardware systems with the programming and software that drives them. You study circuits, embedded systems, digital signal processing, microprocessors, and computer architecture alongside software development and systems programming. Practical laboratory work is central throughout — you spend significant time building and testing circuits, programming microcontrollers, and working with real hardware. Many programmes include a structured work placement in industry, typically in your penultimate year, with employers such as Analog Devices, Intel, or medical device companies in the west and midlands. A final-year project usually involves designing and implementing a working electronic or computing system, often in collaboration with an industry partner.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO, and competition for places is strong, with points requirements typically in the high to very high range depending on the institution. A Leaving Certificate with at least six subjects is required, and Higher Level Mathematics is almost universally mandatory; Higher Level Physics is strongly advantageous and sometimes required. English is required at Ordinary Level minimum. Applicants without the Leaving Certificate can enter via a relevant QQI Level 5 or 6 FET/PLC award in Engineering or Electronics, with specific distinctions usually required for CAO progression. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student entry route, which considers life and work experience alongside any qualifications. HEAR and DARE schemes are available at most institutions for applicants from socioeconomic disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

The outlook for Electronic and Computer Engineering graduates in Ireland is very strong, driven by continued investment by semiconductor, med-tech, and ICT multinationals. Ireland's role as a European hub for companies such as Intel and Analog Devices means demand for embedded and hardware engineers consistently exceeds supply. Graduate salaries typically range from approximately €38,000 to €52,000, rising considerably with experience and specialisation. Engineers Ireland accreditation of most programmes enhances professional recognition and supports chartered engineer pathways.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is increasingly integrated into electronic systems, with graduates expected to understand machine learning at the edge and AI-accelerated hardware design. Tools such as AI-assisted circuit simulation, automated hardware verification, and neural network deployment on embedded platforms are becoming standard in industry. This creates opportunities for engineers who can bridge the gap between hardware capability and AI software requirements. The fundamentals of circuit design and systems engineering remain essential and are not easily automated, keeping the profession resilient.
