Equine Science covers the biology, management and welfare of horses, drawing on disciplines including anatomy, physiology, nutrition, genetics and breeding. You study exercise physiology and how training regimes affect equine performance, alongside stud farm management and reproductive technologies. Practical work is central to the programme — you spend significant time in yards and stables, and undertake structured industry placements, often with thoroughbred studs, racing yards or equine veterinary practices. Some programmes offer Erasmus exchange opportunities in countries with strong equine industries such as France, the UK or Germany. A typical week combines lectures and laboratory sessions with hands-on horse handling, exercise testing and stable management duties.

Entry is normally through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English and Maths (Ordinary level acceptable in most cases). Biology is strongly recommended, and Agricultural Science or Chemistry is a useful advantage. CAO points requirements are moderate, though demand for places can vary between institutions. QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET awards in Agriculture, Equine Studies or Animal Care offer a recognised progression route for applicants without the standard Leaving Certificate. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply directly through the mature-student CAO pathway, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available to eligible applicants.
Ireland has one of the most significant equine industries in the world, with thoroughbred breeding and racing contributing substantially to the rural economy, giving graduates relatively strong domestic employment prospects. Demand for graduates with scientific knowledge combined with practical horsemanship is consistent, particularly in stud management and nutrition advisory roles. Salaries for entry-level roles typically range from approximately €25,000 to €32,000 gross per annum, rising considerably with experience and specialisation. International opportunities exist in the UK, France, Australia and the United States for graduates willing to work abroad.
AI and data analytics are increasingly used in equine performance monitoring, with wearable sensors and machine learning helping trainers and vets assess gait, fitness and injury risk. Genomic selection tools driven by AI are improving breeding decisions in the thoroughbred industry, and you will likely encounter these technologies during your studies and placements. However, the fundamentally hands-on, animal-centred nature of equine work means that practical horsemanship and veterinary judgement remain skills that AI cannot replace. Graduates who can combine data literacy with traditional equine expertise will be well positioned in the evolving industry.

How to apply
Most BSc (Hons) Equine Science programmes in Ireland are applied for through the CAO (cao.ie) for standard Leaving Certificate applicants, with offers made in August each year. Teagasc college programmes may involve a direct application to the college alongside the CAO process, and some programmes require an equine competency or interview component.
