A Fashion Design degree develops your skills in garment construction, pattern cutting, textile manipulation, and collection development. You will study fashion history, colour theory, and the cultural contexts that shape clothing and style, including Ireland's rich textile and craft heritage. The course is intensively studio-based, meaning a typical week involves time at the cutting table, sewing machines, and digital design software alongside critique sessions and research seminars. Many programmes include industry placements with Irish and international fashion houses, and Erasmus exchanges to fashion schools in Europe allow you to experience different design cultures. By your final year, you will develop and present a graduate collection that demonstrates a coherent personal design vision.
Entry to a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design in Ireland typically requires a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects, including English; Higher Level Art is strongly advantageous and sometimes specified. CAO points for the main providers are competitive, particularly for NCAD, where demand is consistently high. Critically, all programmes require a portfolio of creative and design work submitted as part of the application process, and shortlisted applicants are usually called to a portfolio interview. QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET awards in Art and Design, Textiles, or Fashion provide a recognised progression route for those who do not come directly from the Leaving Certificate. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student pathway and are assessed primarily on portfolio quality and interview performance. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available at participating institutions for students from socioeconomic disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.
The Irish fashion industry is relatively small compared to major European markets, so many graduates combine freelance work with roles in related creative industries such as costume, retail, or textile design. Demand is moderate but consistent, with opportunities growing in sustainable and ethical fashion as consumer awareness increases. The strong Irish film and television production sector, supported by Section 481 tax incentives, has created steady demand for skilled costume and wardrobe professionals. Building an online presence and a strong portfolio is essential for standing out in what remains a highly competitive graduate market.
AI-driven tools are beginning to influence fashion design through generative pattern creation, trend forecasting algorithms, and virtual sampling software that reduces reliance on physical prototypes. You will likely use AI-assisted design tools to speed up early concept development and explore colourways and silhouettes more rapidly. However, the hands-on craft skills of draping, stitching, and tactile fabric knowledge remain central and are not easily replicated by automation. Graduates who combine strong making skills with fluency in digital and AI tools will be well positioned as the industry evolves.
5 CAO courses lead to this qualification. Points shown are last year's Round 1 score.

How to apply
Most undergraduate Fashion Design programmes in Ireland are applied for through the CAO (cao.ie) by the February deadline, with applicants typically needing five Leaving Certificate subjects at O6/H7 or above including English. Griffith College and ATU may accept direct applications and use QQI FET awards as an alternative entry route.
