What will you learn?

A Bachelor of Science degree gives you a broad grounding in the natural sciences before you specialise in a chosen discipline — such as biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or environmental science — typically after your first year. You explore scientific principles through lectures, laboratory practicals, and data analysis sessions, building both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experimental skills. Many programmes include a research project in your final year, working alongside academic staff on live investigations. Some institutions offer Erasmus+ exchange opportunities, allowing you to study at a European university for a semester. A typical week balances lectures with scheduled lab sessions, tutorials, and independent study, giving you a genuine taste of life as a working scientist.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO, and points requirements are generally moderate to high depending on the institution and the specific science stream you choose. A minimum of six Leaving Certificate subjects is required, including English and Mathematics; Higher Level Mathematics is strongly recommended and may be essential for physics or mathematical science pathways. Laboratory science subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, or Physics are not always compulsory but are a significant advantage and may be required for certain specialisms. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET awards in science or a related area provide a recognised progression route onto Level 7 or Level 8 programmes, depending on the institution's linkage agreements. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student CAO route, and HEAR and DARE schemes are available for applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

Graduate employment prospects for science graduates in Ireland are generally strong, particularly in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and agri-food sectors, which continue to expand. Starting salaries typically range from around €28,000 to €38,000 per year, with experienced scientists in industry earning €50,000 or more. Graduates who go on to complete a postgraduate qualification often access higher-level research, regulatory, or managerial roles. Ireland's position as a hub for international life sciences companies means opportunities are available both domestically and internationally.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping scientific research, with machine learning tools now used for data analysis, predictive modelling, and drug discovery. As a science student, you will likely engage with AI-assisted laboratory instrumentation and bioinformatics platforms as part of your training. Routine data processing tasks are becoming more automated, shifting graduate roles towards interpretation, experimental design, and critical evaluation rather than manual computation. Scientists who can work confidently alongside AI tools will be well positioned in a rapidly evolving research environment.
