What will you learn?

This programme combines professional golf coaching, sports management, and leisure facility operations with integrated PGA (Professional Golfers' Association) training. You study the technical side of golf instruction, course management, retail merchandising, and the business of running a golf club or resort. Practical placements are central to the course, placing you in golf clubs, leisure centres, and tourism operations across Ireland and potentially abroad through Erasmus partnerships. A typical week includes time on the driving range or course developing coaching skills, classroom-based business and marketing modules, and hands-on experience in pro-shop retail. Ireland's thriving golf-tourism industry, which draws hundreds of thousands of international visitors annually, makes this a course with strong real-world relevance.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate, requiring a minimum of O6/H7 in English and Mathematics along with passes in three other subjects. Points requirements are moderate, reflecting the specialist nature of the programme. Physical education, business, or tourism subjects at Leaving Certificate level are an advantage, though not always compulsory. A QQI Level 5 or 6 award in sport, leisure, or business from a PLC course can provide an alternative progression route into the programme. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature-student entry route and may be interviewed or assessed on relevant golf or leisure industry experience. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible applicants.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Ireland's golf industry supports over 400 clubs and a growing golf-tourism economy, meaning demand for qualified PGA professionals and club managers remains steady. Graduates who complete PGA accreditation alongside their degree are particularly well placed for employment both in Ireland and internationally. The combination of business and coaching skills broadens your options beyond traditional club roles into resort management, sports retail, and tourism. Experienced professionals with management responsibilities can earn competitive salaries, with golf club managers typically earning in the range of €35,000 to €55,000 gross per year depending on the size and prestige of the facility.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to influence golf coaching through video analysis platforms and swing-analysis software that can provide instant, data-driven feedback to players and instructors. Club management systems are increasingly using AI-driven scheduling, revenue management, and customer relationship tools to improve operations and profitability. As a graduate, you will benefit from understanding these technologies to stay competitive in modern club and facility management. However, the fundamentally human elements of coaching, mentoring, and building member relationships remain central to the profession and are unlikely to be displaced by automation.
