What will you learn?

Interior Architecture and Design at degree level equips you with the skills to transform built environments — from residential homes and retail spaces to hospitality venues and commercial offices. You study spatial design theory, architectural history, and the technical side of interiors, including construction detailing, materials, finishes, and building regulations. Practical studio work forms the backbone of your week: you develop design proposals using hand drawing, CAD software, and BIM (Building Information Modelling) tools. Presentations, model-making, site visits, and live briefs with industry clients are common. Many programmes include work placement in an interior design or architecture practice, and some offer opportunities for international exchange through Erasmus+.

Required Education

Entry to this degree typically requires a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects, including English at Ordinary level as a baseline, though most competitive applicants hold Higher-level results across several subjects. Art is a particularly useful Leaving Cert subject, and many programmes require or strongly favour a portfolio of creative work submitted alongside your CAO application. CAO points demand is generally moderate to high, reflecting the programme's popularity and studio-based nature. QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET awards in Art and Design or Interior Design offer a recognised progression route into first or second year of the degree. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature student entry route, and HEAR and DARE schemes support applicants from socioeconomic disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

Graduate prospects in Ireland are generally positive, particularly as commercial fit-out, hospitality refurbishment, and sustainable retrofit projects continue to drive demand for qualified interior designers. Graduates with strong BIM and CAD skills are especially sought after by practices working on large-scale commercial and residential developments. Freelance and self-employed work is common in this field, particularly for those with several years of experience. Salary levels for early-career graduates typically range from around €28,000 to €36,000 gross per year, rising significantly with experience and specialisation.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-powered visualisation and generative design tools are increasingly used in interior design practice to produce rapid concept visuals, mood boards, and spatial layouts. Tools such as AI-enhanced rendering software are becoming standard in professional studios, meaning graduates need digital fluency alongside traditional design skills. However, the judgement-based, client-facing, and regulatory aspects of interior architecture are less easily automated, keeping human expertise central. Programmes are beginning to incorporate AI literacy and prompt-based design tools into their curricula to prepare students for evolving industry workflows.
