A Product Design degree teaches you how to conceive, develop and bring physical products to life, combining creative thinking with engineering principles and materials science. You will study user-centred design methods, ergonomics, sustainable materials and manufacturing processes, moving from initial sketches through digital modelling to working prototypes. Specialist pathways often include consumer electronics, furniture, medical devices and sustainable product development. A typical week might involve studio critiques, CAD software workshops, materials testing and collaborative briefs with industry partners. Many programmes include a work placement semester with Irish or international companies, and some offer Erasmus exchange opportunities at European design schools.
Entry is normally through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate that includes English and, depending on the institution, Maths at Ordinary or Higher level; some programmes at TU Shannon or UL specify Higher-level Maths or a science subject. NCAD and UL typically require a portfolio submission or design aptitude test in addition to academic results. CAO points for Product Design are generally moderate to high, reflecting strong competition for limited places. QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET awards in Art and Design or Engineering Technology can provide a progression route into Year 1 or Year 2 at some technological universities. Mature students (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature-student CAO route, and HEAR and DARE schemes support access for eligible applicants.
Demand for product designers in Ireland is steady and growing, particularly in the med-tech and technology sectors, which continue to expand their Irish operations. Graduates with strong CAD skills, prototyping experience and an understanding of regulatory requirements for medical devices are especially sought after. Starting salaries typically range from around €28,000 to €38,000, rising to €45,000–€65,000 or more with experience in specialist or senior roles. The emphasis on sustainability and circular economy thinking is opening additional opportunities in packaging, materials innovation and green product development.
AI is increasingly being integrated into the product design workflow, with generative design tools such as those within Autodesk Fusion enabling rapid exploration of complex geometries and optimised structures that would take far longer to develop manually. Machine learning is also being applied to user research, helping designers analyse large datasets of user behaviour and feedback more efficiently. Rather than replacing designers, these tools are shifting the role towards higher-level creative direction, critical evaluation of AI-generated concepts and ethical oversight of design decisions. Students are already expected to engage critically with AI-assisted design tools as part of their coursework.

How to apply
Undergraduate Product Design degrees in Ireland are applied for through the CAO (cao.ie) with a closing date of 1 February each year; most programmes require a portfolio submission or design aptitude assessment in addition to Leaving Certificate results. Applicants should check individual institution requirements as portfolio submission deadlines and interview dates vary by provider.
