This apprenticeship trains you in the traditional and contemporary craft of working with natural stone, covering banker masonry (shaping and carving stone on a bench), fixer masonry (setting stone on site), and the conservation and repair of historic stonework. You learn to work with Irish materials such as limestone, granite, and sandstone, developing skills in cutting, dressing, jointing, and finishing. Practical on-the-job training with an approved employer makes up the majority of your time, supplemented by off-the-job phases in a further education college. A typical week involves working on live construction or heritage restoration sites, handling specialist tools and equipment, reading technical drawings, and attending block-release classes covering theory, materials science, and heritage conservation principles.
Entry is through the apprenticeship route, meaning you must first secure a position with a SOLAS-approved employer in the construction or heritage sector. You are generally expected to have completed the Leaving Certificate or equivalent, and a good standard of English and basic numeracy is important for reading technical drawings and specifications. There are no strictly prescribed Leaving Cert subject requirements, but subjects such as Technical Graphics, Construction Studies, or Art are considered useful background. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may be considered on the basis of relevant work experience. Alternatively, a relevant QQI Level 5 Construction or Craft Studies award from a PLC course can help you secure an employer placement and provide useful practical groundwork before commencing the apprenticeship.
Qualified stonemasons are in strong demand in Ireland given the country's significant stock of historic buildings and the construction sector's ongoing growth. The OPW and heritage bodies require skilled conservators, and there is a recognised shortage of craft workers with traditional masonry skills. Self-employment and subcontracting are common and viable career paths once you have built up experience and a professional reputation. Gross annual earnings for a qualified stonemason in Ireland typically range from around €35,000 to €55,000, with experienced conservation specialists or self-employed contractors earning more.
AI and digital tools are beginning to influence stonemasonry through technologies such as CNC stone-cutting machines, 3D scanning of historic stonework for conservation records, and BIM (Building Information Modelling) for complex restoration projects. However, the hand-skill element of banker masonry, carving, and heritage repair is highly resistant to full automation, as each piece of natural stone is unique and requires experienced judgement. AI-assisted design software may support pattern work and setting-out tasks, but the core craft remains firmly hands-on. Overall, AI is more likely to enhance your productivity than to displace the trade.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
How to apply
This is an employer-led apprenticeship registered through SOLAS; applicants must first secure a contract with an approved employer in the stonecutting or stonemasonry trade, after which the employer registers them as an apprentice via the SOLAS apprenticeship system. Off-the-job training phases are delivered at designated Education and Training Board (ETB) centres, and there is no CAO application involved.
