Upholstery and Furniture Restoration (QQI Level 5)

Trades & Services

Duration

1 years

Level

FET

Outlook

Stable

What will you learn?

This course introduces you to both traditional and contemporary upholstery techniques, covering everything from stripping down and rebuilding furniture frames to applying fabrics, foams, and fillings. You will learn how to restore antique and vintage pieces using period-appropriate methods, as well as work on modern bespoke commissions using current materials and tools. Practical workshop sessions form the core of your week, where you work on real furniture items — repairing frames, applying webbing and springs, cutting and sewing fabric, and finishing pieces to a professional standard. You will also study colour, pattern, and fabric selection to develop your eye for design. Some colleges include a work placement element with furniture studios, interior design firms, or restoration workshops.

Required Education

Entry to a QQI Level 5 Upholstery and Furniture Restoration course typically requires a Junior Cycle or Leaving Certificate qualification, though many ETB colleges accept applicants on the basis of relevant interest or experience rather than strict academic results. Subjects such as Art and Design, Construction Studies, or Home Economics at Leaving Cert can be an advantage. No specific CAO points apply, as these courses are accessed directly through the college or ETB, with places often allocated on a first-come, first-served basis or by interview. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) are particularly welcome and may apply without formal qualifications if they can demonstrate relevant experience or motivation. HEAR and DARE schemes do not apply at this level, but some ETBs offer additional learning support for students with disabilities or literacy needs.

Career Prospects

Demand for skilled upholsterers remains steady in Ireland, particularly as interest in sustainable living and furniture restoration continues to grow as an alternative to buying new. Experienced practitioners with a strong portfolio can find consistent work through word of mouth and online platforms. Self-employment is common in this trade, giving you flexibility to build a client base across domestic, commercial, and heritage sectors. While the overall number of positions is not large, skilled craftspeople are relatively scarce, which works in your favour when establishing yourself.

Impact of AI on this program

AI currently has a limited direct impact on hands-on upholstery and restoration work, as the craft relies heavily on manual skill, material judgement, and experience developed over time. However, AI-powered design tools can assist with fabric pattern planning, colour matching, and client visualisations, helping you present ideas more professionally. Business management tools using AI may help self-employed upholsterers with quoting, scheduling, and social media marketing. The physical, tactile nature of this trade means it is one of the more resilient craft occupations in the face of automation.
