"What if you stood up on a surfboard on the Atlantic coast by Sunday?"
There is nothing quite like the Atlantic off the Clare coast — it is wild, cold, and completely indifferent to your nerves, which somehow makes standing up on that board for the first time feel enormous. You will wobble, you will fall in, you will swallow a mouthful of saltwater and laugh anyway. That moment when you actually ride a wave, even for two seconds, hits differently than almost anything else. It teaches you that your body can do things your brain was busy talking you out of, and that is a good thing to know about yourself.

I'd been telling myself I'd try surfing for about four years, which is embarrassing to admit out loud.
