What does an Animal Care Attendant do?

As an Animal Care Attendant you provide daily, hands-on care for a range of non-production animals, including feeding, watering, grooming, and cleaning their living spaces. You monitor the health and behaviour of animals under your care, reporting any signs of illness or distress to a supervising veterinarian or animal welfare officer. Your work may involve assisting with the safe transportation of animals, supporting environmental enrichment activities, and helping to handle veterinary emergencies as they arise. You might work alongside vets, vet nurses, kennel managers, or shelter coordinators in settings such as veterinary clinics, animal rescue shelters, boarding kennels, or pet retail outlets. Ensuring compliance with Irish animal welfare legislation is a core part of every working day.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Animal Care Attendant

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6.45 a.m. and you are at the rescue shelter by 7.30. The first task every morning is the health check round. You walk each kennel and cattery unit, observing every animal before anyone else disturbs them. You are looking at posture, appetite from the overnight feed, stool consistency, and any unusual discharge from eyes or nose. If anything concerns you, you log it on the paper welfare observation sheet clipped to the kennel door and flag it verbally to the shelter coordinator when she arrives at eight. By 8.15 you are mixing feeds according to the diet charts printed for each animal. Portions, food type, and any supplements are all specified, so there is no guessing. You fill stainless steel bowls, top up fresh water, and work your way through thirty-odd dogs before moving to the cattery. The smell and noise levels at feeding time take some getting used to, especially in the dog block.

Required Education

A Leaving Certificate is not always a strict requirement, but subjects such as Biology, Agricultural Science, and Home Economics provide a useful foundation. The most common entry route is a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Animal Care, offered through Colleges of Further Education and ETBs across Ireland, covering animal husbandry, welfare legislation, and basic veterinary assistance. Some providers also offer a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Animal Care for those wishing to take on more responsibility or progress into supervisory roles. There is no statutory professional registration body specifically for animal care attendants in Ireland, though employers often expect familiarity with relevant animal welfare legislation, including the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013. Practical work placements, typically included as part of QQI programmes, are highly valued by employers and often lead directly to employment.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Animal Care Attendants begin their careers after completing a QQI Level 5 Animal Care programme and securing a position in a kennel, shelter, or veterinary practice. With experience, you may progress to a senior attendant or kennel supervisor role, taking on responsibility for rostering staff and overseeing the daily care of a larger animal population. Further study at QQI Level 6 or a Level 7/8 degree in Animal Science or Veterinary Nursing can open doors to more specialised roles, including veterinary nursing (regulated by VNCI), animal behaviourist, or wildlife rehabilitation officer. Some experienced attendants move into management roles within larger animal welfare organisations such as the DSPCA or ISPCA.

AI Impact on the job

AI tools are beginning to support animal health monitoring through smart sensors and camera systems that track animal behaviour and flag abnormalities, potentially reducing some routine observation tasks. However, the hands-on, physical nature of grooming, feeding, and direct animal care means that human attendants remain essential and cannot be replaced by automation in the near future. AI-assisted record-keeping systems may streamline administrative tasks, freeing up more time for direct animal care. Overall, AI is likely to act as a support tool rather than a replacement, and attendants who are comfortable using digital care management platforms will have an advantage.
