What does a Livestock Advisor do?

As a Livestock Advisor you work directly with farmers and livestock breeders to optimise the performance, welfare, and profitability of their herds. Your daily work involves visiting farms, assessing animal health and feeding regimes, interpreting production data, and delivering practical recommendations on breeding, nutrition, and herd management. You liaise closely with veterinarians, co-op representatives, and Teagasc colleagues to ensure farmers are applying best practice in line with Irish and EU animal welfare and environmental legislation. You may also assist farmers in preparing for inspections, completing grant applications, and keeping records that meet the requirements of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Livestock Advisor

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6:45 a.m. You check your phone before you even get out of bed — a dairy farmer outside Tullamore has sent a message saying two of his cows calved overnight and one is showing signs of milk fever. You reply to say you will call in first thing and adjust your schedule accordingly. By 8:00 a.m. you are on the road in your Teagasc-branded jeep, wellies and waterproofs in the back. At the farm you assess the affected cow, confirm the likely calcium deficiency with the farmer, and recommend he contacts his vet immediately for an intravenous drip. You are not a vet, and you are clear about that boundary. While you wait, you walk the shed and note that the dry-cow transition diet needs adjusting — you will flag this in your written farm report later.

Required Education

A strong Leaving Certificate, particularly in Agricultural Science, Biology, and Chemistry at Higher level, provides an excellent foundation for entry into this field. The typical minimum route is an NFQ Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree in Agriculture or Animal Science, available at institutions such as ATU, TUS, SETU, and Maynooth University, or an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor at UCD, UCC, or University of Galway. Teagasc also runs accredited programmes in partnership with institutes of technology that combine academic study with practical farm placement. PLC courses in agriculture at Level 5 can serve as a stepping stone to higher education for students who do not progress directly from the Leaving Certificate. Professional membership of organisations such as the Agricultural Science Association (ASA) is valued by employers and supports continuing professional development throughout your career.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Livestock Advisors begin their careers in a graduate advisory role with Teagasc, a co-operative such as Dairygold or Lakeland Dairies, or a private consultancy, typically managing a portfolio of farms under the guidance of a senior advisor. With experience, you take on greater autonomy, specialising in areas such as dairy production, beef finishing, sheep systems, or breeding programmes. Progression may lead to a senior advisory or regional management role, or you may choose to pursue an NFQ Level 9 Masters in Agricultural Science or Agribusiness to move into policy, research, or consultancy leadership. Some experienced advisors establish their own independent consultancy practices, offering specialist services to larger farm enterprises.

AI Impact on the job

AI and precision livestock technologies are beginning to transform how advisors collect and interpret farm data, with tools such as automated milk recording, body condition scoring software, and predictive health monitoring reducing the time spent on routine data gathering. These developments allow you to focus more on high-value strategic advice and farmer engagement rather than manual record analysis. However, the relational, on-farm nature of livestock advisory work means that human judgement, trust-building, and practical experience remain central to the role and cannot be replicated by automated systems. Advisors who embrace digital tools and develop data literacy skills will be better positioned to deliver more targeted, efficient services to their clients.
