As a Localisation Specialist you adapt software, apps, websites, games, and other digital content so that it feels natural and appropriate for a specific regional market, going well beyond simple word-for-word translation to capture cultural nuances, idioms, and local conventions. You work with translation memory tools, content management systems, and localisation platforms to manage large volumes of multilingual content efficiently. Your day involves reviewing source text, producing or post-editing translations, checking that user interfaces display correctly in the target language, and ensuring terminology is consistent across a product. You collaborate closely with software developers, project managers, translators, and quality assurance testers, and you may coordinate external language vendors or freelance translators.
Listen: a day as a Localisation Specialist
You arrive at the Dublin office of a multinational software company at half eight, grab a coffee, and open your project management dashboard. Three new localisation tasks landed overnight from the US engineering team: a batch of updated UI strings for a mobile app, a short marketing banner, and a revised set of error messages. You log into the translation management system — in this office the team uses memoQ — and assess word counts and deadlines before the nine o'clock stand-up call. The stand-up is brief. You flag that forty of the new strings contain variables, like {user_name} or {date_format}, which cannot be translated literally and need careful handling so the app does not break. The project manager adjusts the timeline, and a developer sends over a style guide update before ten.
A Leaving Certificate with strong performance in languages (Irish, French, German, Spanish, or other modern languages) and English is a solid foundation, and Business or Computer Science subjects are increasingly useful. Most Localisation Specialists in Ireland enter the field with an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Translation Studies, Applied Languages, Modern Languages and Linguistics, or a combined languages and computing degree; programmes at UCD, University of Galway, DCU, and UL are well regarded. Some roles are accessible with an NFQ Level 7 degree in a related language or humanities field, particularly when supported by practical experience and tool proficiency. Postgraduate programmes such as an MA in Translation or Localisation (NFQ Level 9), available at several Irish universities, are increasingly valued for senior or specialist positions. Professional development through bodies such as the Irish Translators and Interpreters Association (ITIA) and industry certifications in tools like SDL Trados, memoQ, or Phrase can strengthen your profile considerably.
Many Localisation Specialists begin their careers in Ireland as junior translators, localisation testers, or language QA analysts, often within the large multinational technology companies based in Dublin, Galway, and Cork that use Ireland as their European localisation hub. With a few years of experience and a strong command of industry tools, you can progress to roles such as Localisation Engineer, Terminology Manager, or Senior Localisation Specialist. From there, movement into Localisation Project Management or Programme Management is a natural step, overseeing teams and vendor relationships across multiple languages and product lines. Experienced professionals may advance to Head of Localisation or Global Content Operations roles, shaping language strategy at an organisational level.
Artificial intelligence and neural machine translation tools have transformed localisation workflows, significantly reducing the volume of translation produced entirely from scratch and shifting much of the work towards post-editing, quality evaluation, and prompt refinement. This means your value increasingly lies in cultural judgement, domain expertise, and the ability to identify subtle errors that automated systems consistently miss. AI-powered localisation platforms are also automating project management tasks such as file handling and vendor assignment, raising expectations around productivity and turnaround times. Rather than replacing localisation professionals, AI is reshaping the role towards higher-level linguistic decision-making, machine translation management, and quality assurance, making technical adaptability an essential skill.
