Set builders construct, build and maintain the scenic environments used in theatre productions, television programmes and film shoots. You work from scale models, architectural drawings and designers' sketches to build structures from materials such as timber, steel, aluminium and various plastics. Your working day involves close collaboration with set designers, art directors, production managers and other backstage crew to ensure that scenic elements are completed safely, on time and within budget. You may also be called upon to adapt or strike sets between performances or production days, and to build exhibition stands for trade fairs or live events.
Listen: a day as a Set Builder
You arrive at the scenic workshop at half seven in the morning, signing in at the production office and picking up your PPE — steel-toecap boots, safety glasses and work gloves. The workshop is a large, draughty unit on an industrial estate outside Dublin, shared between a small scenic construction company and a props-hire firm. Your site supervisor hands you a printed call sheet and a set of scaled technical drawings for a television drama being filmed at a nearby studio. Today the team is building a period kitchen set: timber-framed flats covered in hardboard, then a false plaster finish. You spend the first hour checking yesterday's timber frames for squareness with a set square and steel tape, making minor adjustments before they are clad. By nine o'clock you are running a circular saw, cutting hardboard panels to size under the supervision of a senior set builder. Ear defenders go on whenever the saw is running — no exceptions. Dust extraction is hooked up, and you make sure the vacuum bag is emptied before you start. The measurements must match the drawing exactly; a centimetre out can mean a flat that does not fit the studio grid. You learn quickly that reading and re-reading the drawings before cutting saves wasted material and wasted time.
Leaving Certificate subjects such as Construction Studies, Engineering, Technical Graphics and Art are particularly useful for this occupation. Many set builders in Ireland enter through a SOLAS craft apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery (NFQ Level 6), which provides both on-the-job experience and related technical instruction. PLC courses in Technical Theatre, Production Design or Stage Management at NFQ Level 5 or 6, offered through colleges such as Coláiste Dhúlaigh CFE or Liberties College, also provide a direct route. Some practitioners go on to complete a Level 7 or 8 degree in Theatre & Performance, Design for Stage and Screen or Production Design at institutions such as TU Dublin or the Lir Academy at TCD. No statutory professional registration is required, though membership of organisations such as SIPTU's Arts and Entertainment Branch is common in the industry.
Most set builders begin as trainees or apprentice carpenters, gaining experience on productions for theatre companies, RTÉ or independent film and TV crews. With a few years of practical experience, you may progress to a Senior Set Builder or Head of Construction role, taking responsibility for leading a build team and managing materials procurement. Experienced practitioners sometimes move into Set Design, Art Direction or Production Design, particularly if they undertake further study. Freelance work is very common in the Irish industry, with practitioners building a portfolio of theatre, film, television and live events experience over time.
AI-assisted design tools are increasingly used by set designers to generate concepts, visualisations and scale models, which means set builders may receive more detailed digital briefs than before. However, the core physical craft of cutting, joining, finishing and installing scenic structures remains hands-on work that AI cannot replicate on a construction floor. AI may assist with scheduling, materials estimation and budget tracking, potentially reducing administrative tasks for senior crew. Overall, the practical craft skills at the heart of this occupation are unlikely to be displaced by AI in the foreseeable future.
