Stage Management and Technical Theatre

Creative Arts & Design

Duration

4 years

Level

Bachelor

Outlook

Stable

What will you learn?

This degree trains you in the technical and organisational backbone of live performance. You study stage management, lighting design, sound, set construction, rigging, and production management, gaining hands-on experience from your first year. A typical week combines practical workshops in scene docks and lighting labs with lectures on production planning, health and safety, and show-calling technique. You develop fluency with industry-standard software and equipment used in professional Irish theatres. Placements with producing theatres, festivals, and touring companies are a central part of the programme, and some courses offer international exchange opportunities. By graduation you are capable of running a production from first rehearsal through to closing night.

Required Education

Entry is normally through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate that meets the general university matriculation requirements, including passing English and Irish. Points demand is typically moderate to high, reflecting the specialist and practical nature of the course. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Design & Communication Graphics, Physics, Music, and Art, though no single technical subject is strictly mandatory. QQI Level 5 or 6 awards in Performing Arts, Stage Management, or a related creative discipline offer a recognised progression route for those coming through the further education sector. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may be considered on the basis of relevant industry experience and a portfolio or interview, and HEAR and DARE access routes apply for eligible students.

Career Prospects

The Irish theatre and live events sector is a consistent employer of technical theatre graduates, with the breadth of skills gained making you competitive across multiple areas simultaneously. Work is often freelance or project-based, particularly in the early years of your career, though established theatres and producing companies do offer staff contracts. Touring work and international opportunities are common, and experienced production managers and technical directors are consistently in demand. Graduates with strong production management skills can also move into television, film, and large-scale events, widening their employment options considerably.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and advanced automation are beginning to influence technical theatre, particularly in lighting programming, sound spatialisation, and automated flying systems, meaning you will need to engage with evolving technologies throughout your career. Pre-visualisation software driven by AI is increasingly used in production planning, reducing costly mistakes before a company enters the venue. However, the live, real-time, human-centred nature of theatre means that experienced judgment and interpersonal skills remain irreplaceable on the production floor. Staying current with emerging tools will be an ongoing professional responsibility rather than a threat to the role itself.
