What will you learn?

Studying Classics and Ancient History immerses you in the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome, covering their history, literature, philosophy, art, and archaeology. You will engage with primary texts in Latin and/or ancient Greek, analysing works by authors such as Virgil, Plato, and Thucydides in their original language and in translation. Modules typically blend close textual study with broader historical and cultural analysis, including topics like the Roman Republic, Athenian democracy, and ancient religion. Practical elements may include museum visits, archaeological site fieldwork, and seminars focused on manuscript or material evidence. A typical week involves lectures, small-group tutorials, language classes, and independent research. Some programmes offer Erasmus exchange opportunities at European universities with strong Classical traditions.

Required Education

Entry to a BA (Hons) in Classics or Ancient History in Ireland is through the CAO, and competition for places at TCD and UCD is moderate to high. The standard minimum requirement is six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including English at Ordinary level or above, with most successful applicants presenting several Higher-level subjects. No knowledge of Latin or ancient Greek is assumed at entry, though prior study of Classical Studies or Latin at Leaving Certificate is an advantage. A strong performance in English, History, and languages is beneficial. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET awards in Humanities or Liberal Arts can provide a progression route for those who did not meet requirements directly. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature-student entry process, and HEAR and DARE schemes support applicants with socioeconomic disadvantage or disabilities.

Career Prospects

Demand for Classics graduates in Ireland is stable, though the field is relatively small and graduates typically move into broader humanities or professional pathways. Teaching remains a significant outlet, particularly as Latin and Classical Studies maintain a presence in the Irish secondary curriculum. The research, analytical writing, and language skills developed are highly transferable and appreciated in the civil service, law, policy, and communications sectors. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study to specialise further or to qualify for research or academic careers.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are beginning to assist in the translation and analysis of ancient texts, with projects using machine learning to reconstruct damaged papyri and inscriptions, such as the Ithaca model for Greek epigraphy. For students, AI can support language learning and literature searches, but the interpretive, linguistic, and critical skills central to Classics remain fundamentally human-led. Scholars and graduates will increasingly need digital literacy to engage with computational approaches to ancient sources. The field's emphasis on close reading and nuanced argument means that AI augments rather than replaces classical scholarship.
