This course teaches you the clinical skill of phlebotomy — the safe collection of blood samples from patients using venepuncture and capillary techniques. You learn about the anatomy of veins, correct needle selection, order of draw, specimen labelling, and transportation of samples to the laboratory. A significant focus is placed on infection control, health and safety, and maintaining patient dignity and comfort. Practical sessions in a clinical skills lab allow you to practise on training arms and, during placement, on real patients under supervision in hospitals, GP practices, or community health settings. A typical week combines classroom theory with hands-on skills workshops and, later in the course, supervised clinical placement hours.
Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, with passes in English and at least one science subject being advantageous, though individual ETBs and colleges of further education set their own minimum requirements. A QQI Level 4 certificate in Health Services or a related area may be accepted in lieu of Leaving Certificate results. Applicants are often expected to have completed, or be undertaking, a broader healthcare qualification such as QQI Level 5 Healthcare Support, as phlebotomy modules are frequently delivered as standalone components within that award. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly and are assessed on relevant healthcare experience, work history, or an interview. Garda vetting and evidence of up-to-date vaccinations, including hepatitis B, are mandatory before clinical placement. Some ETBs require a completed occupational health assessment prior to commencing the programme.
Demand for trained phlebotomists in Ireland is steady, driven by an ageing population, increased diagnostic testing, and the expansion of community care services. The HSE and private healthcare providers actively recruit phlebotomists, and the skill is increasingly valued as an add-on qualification for healthcare assistants seeking to improve their employability. Starting salaries in the HSE typically fall within the healthcare assistant pay scale, broadly in the range of €28,000–€34,000 gross per year, with higher earnings possible in private or agency settings. Phlebotomy skills are also transferable to broader laboratory and clinical support roles.
AI has limited direct impact on the manual clinical skill of venepuncture itself, which requires physical dexterity and patient interaction that cannot be automated in routine settings. However, AI-driven laboratory information systems are increasingly used to process, track, and flag specimen results, so familiarity with digital health records and electronic requesting systems is becoming important. Vein-finding devices using near-infrared imaging are one example of technology beginning to assist in difficult venepuncture cases. Overall, the hands-on, patient-facing nature of phlebotomy means the role remains largely human-led.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
How to apply
Phlebotomy Skills at QQI Level 5 is offered as a standalone module or as part of a broader Healthcare Support or Community & Health Services PLC programme; applicants apply directly to their local ETB college or college of further education, with some HSE-run programmes open only to existing healthcare staff via internal application. There is no CAO code; entry typically requires Leaving Certificate or equivalent, and competitive selection may apply due to limited clinical placement capacity.
