Carve a wooden spoon in the woods

"What if you made a kitchen tool from a branch in one afternoon?"

Why this is so fun

There is something genuinely surprising about walking into a Wicklow wood with a branch and walking out with a thing you can actually eat porridge with. Your hands do work they have never done before, your brain goes quiet, and two hours disappear without you noticing. You learn that patience is not boring when the result is physical and real. Mess it up and it is still yours. Get it right and you will never buy a cheap spoon again without feeling slightly smug about what you know.

Someone who did this

Eoin (30), Waterford — site safety officer, restores old bicycles in the shed when the mood takes him

I drove up to Wicklow on a Saturday in October not really knowing what I'd signed up for, just that it was €65, included lunch, and my sister had told me to do something with my hands for once.
