Health & Social Care
As a Mental Health Nurse you assess, plan, and deliver care for people experiencing mental health difficulties such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, and personality disorders. You work closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists as part of a multidisciplinary team in settings ranging from inpatient psychiatric units and community mental health teams to CAMHS services and addiction services. Your daily responsibilities include administering and monitoring medications, conducting risk assessments, delivering talking therapies and psychoeducation, and maintaining detailed clinical records. You build therapeutic relationships with service users and their families, supporting recovery, independence, and wellbeing over the longer term.
Listen: a day as a Mental Health Nurse
Your alarm goes off at 06:45 for a 07:30 start on an inpatient psychiatric unit attached to a general hospital in the HSE's Community Healthcare area. You pull on your uniform, grab a travel mug of coffee, and make it to the ward in time for handover. The night nurse runs through each of the fourteen service users on the unit: who had a difficult night, who received a PRN — that is, an as-needed dose of medication — and who needs a formal risk assessment first thing. You note everything on the ward's electronic patient record system. By 08:30 you are doing the morning medication round with a colleague, drawing up and administering prescribed doses, checking for side effects such as drowsiness or restlessness, and recording each step in the clinical notes. One service user refuses their medication. You sit with them, listen to their concerns without rushing, and document the refusal clearly — both for their safety and to inform the treating psychiatrist at the morning multidisciplinary team meeting.

icould career stories
Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
The primary route in Ireland is a BSc in Psychiatric Nursing (NFQ Level 8), offered through the CAO at universities and technological universities including UCD, UCC, University of Galway, TU Dublin, ATU, and UL; the programme typically takes four years and combines academic study with substantial clinical placements in HSE-approved settings. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Biology, Chemistry, and subjects demonstrating communication skills such as English; a good mix of Higher Level subjects is generally expected to be competitive for CAO points. Upon graduation you must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) in the Mental Health Division before you can practise as a qualified Mental Health Nurse. Some nurses enter through a general nursing registration first and then complete a postgraduate conversion or specialist programme in psychiatric nursing at NFQ Level 9. Continuing professional development (CPD) is required by NMBI throughout your career, and many nurses go on to complete postgraduate diplomas or master's degrees in areas such as cognitive behavioural therapy, addiction nursing, or clinical supervision.
Most Mental Health Nurses begin as Staff Nurses in HSE inpatient units or community mental health teams, gaining broad clinical experience across different presentations and settings. After several years you can progress to Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) roles in areas such as early intervention psychosis, eating disorders, or forensic mental health, or move into management as a CNS or Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM). Further advancement can lead to Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) roles, which allow independent prescribing and autonomous clinical practice, or into education, research, and policy within the HSE or higher education institutions. Postgraduate study at NFQ Level 9 or 10 is typically required for senior specialist and ANP positions.
AI tools are increasingly being introduced to support clinical decision-making in mental health settings, for example through predictive risk-scoring systems and digital symptom-monitoring platforms that help nurses identify early deterioration. Administrative tasks such as clinical note summarisation and scheduling are being partially automated, freeing nurses to spend more time in direct therapeutic contact with service users. However, the fundamentally human nature of the therapeutic relationship means that core nursing responsibilities — building trust, delivering empathic care, and making contextual clinical judgements — are unlikely to be replaced by AI in the foreseeable future. Mental Health Nurses will need to develop digital health literacy to evaluate, use, and critically appraise AI-assisted tools in their practice.
