As a Software Developer you design, write, test, and maintain the code that powers applications, websites, and systems used by businesses and individuals. You translate specifications and technical requirements into working software using programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, or C#. Your day-to-day work involves collaborating with designers, product managers, and other engineers to build new features, fix bugs, and improve performance. You may work on anything from mobile apps and web platforms to back-end data systems and enterprise software, depending on the organisation you work for.
Listen: a day as a Software Developer
You arrive at the office in Dublin city centre at around 8:45 and grab a coffee before settling in. Your team works in a hybrid model, so roughly half the developers are remote today and the rest are at desks nearby. You open your laptop, check Slack for any overnight alerts from automated monitoring tools, and scan the Jira board where tasks are tracked. Nothing is on fire, which is a good start. At 9:15 the whole product team joins a fifteen-minute stand-up on Google Meet. Each person says what they worked on yesterday, what they plan to do today, and whether anything is blocking them. You mention that you are mid-way through building a new user authentication feature using a REST API written in Node.js, and that you need a decision from the product manager about password-reset behaviour before you can finish.

Deirdre Arnold of FIT Ltd speaks about apprenticeships as a software developer
Jobs Expo Ireland
Most Software Developers in Ireland enter the field through a Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, available at universities such as UCD, TCD, DCU, UL, and technological universities including TU Dublin, MTU, and ATU. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Mathematics (Higher Level is strongly recommended), Computer Science, Physics, and Applied Mathematics provide an excellent foundation. A Level 6 ICT Associate Professional apprenticeship through SOLAS offers an earn-and-learn route, combining workplace training with academic study. PLC courses in Computing or Software Development at Level 5 or 6 (QQI) can also serve as a stepping stone to higher education via the CAO linked places or direct entry. Some developers supplement their degree with a Level 9 Masters in Computer Science or a specialist area such as Artificial Intelligence or Cybersecurity to advance their careers. No statutory professional registration body is required, though Engineers Ireland membership and industry certifications (e.g. AWS, Microsoft Azure) are valued.
Graduates typically begin as Junior Developers or Associate Software Engineers, working under the guidance of senior colleagues on defined tasks and smaller features. With two to four years of experience, you progress to a mid-level Software Developer role, taking ownership of larger components and contributing to architectural decisions. From there, you may advance to Senior Developer, Tech Lead, or Solutions Architect, mentoring junior staff and guiding technical strategy. Some developers move into management as Engineering Managers or CTOs, while others specialise deeply in areas such as machine learning, cybersecurity, or cloud infrastructure.
AI-powered coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT are increasingly used by Software Developers to generate boilerplate code, suggest solutions, and speed up routine tasks. This raises productivity but also raises the bar, as employers expect developers to focus more on architecture, code review, and problem-solving rather than basic syntax. Roles centred on AI and machine learning development are growing rapidly in Ireland, creating new opportunities for developers who understand how to build, fine-tune, and deploy AI models. Overall, AI is reshaping rather than replacing the role, with adaptable developers who embrace these tools remaining highly sought after.
