What will you learn?

This QQI Level 5 programme gives you a practical foundation in how computer networks are designed, built and maintained. You will learn how data travels across local and wide-area networks, how to configure routers and switches, and how to protect systems from security threats. Modules cover hardware installation, operating systems, and basic programming or scripting. A typical week mixes classroom theory with hands-on lab sessions where you physically cable up network equipment, configure devices using command-line interfaces, and troubleshoot connectivity problems. Some colleges include work experience placements with local IT businesses or public-sector organisations, giving you real workplace exposure before you progress to a degree programme.

Required Education

Entry is typically based on your Junior Certificate results or equivalent, with most Colleges of Further Education requiring at least five passes at Ordinary level, including English and Maths. No specific Higher Level subjects are required at this stage, though a background in Junior Cycle Science or a practical interest in technology is helpful. There are no CAO points involved; you apply directly to the college or through a college prospectus, and places may be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis or by interview. Mature applicants aged 23 or over are generally welcome and may be assessed on life and work experience rather than formal qualifications. Those with a disability or from disadvantaged backgrounds can access support through ETB guidance services similar to DARE and HEAR pathways at third level.

Career Prospects

Demand for networking and IT support skills remains strong in Ireland given the country's concentration of large technology multinationals and expanding public-sector digital infrastructure. Entry-level IT support and junior network roles typically attract starting salaries in the region of €28,000 to €36,000 gross per year, with progression possible as you gain experience and additional certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA. Employers in Ireland frequently value these industry certifications alongside formal qualifications, so combining your QQI award with vendor credentials strengthens your employability considerably. The broader ICT sector continues to recruit steadily, and technician-level roles are rarely subject to the same market volatility as some specialist graduate positions.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-driven tools are increasingly being used in network monitoring and threat detection, automating tasks such as anomaly identification and traffic analysis that were previously done manually. As a networking professional you will need to understand how these tools work and how to interpret their outputs, rather than perform every check by hand. AI does not replace the need for skilled technicians who can physically install hardware, respond on-site, and make judgement calls during outages or security incidents. Staying current with AI-assisted network management platforms will become an important part of continuing professional development in this field.
