What will you learn?

Studying Theology and Religious Studies at degree level introduces you to the critical and scholarly examination of religious belief, practice, and tradition. You will explore Scripture, Christian theology, ethics, philosophy of religion, and world religions including Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Modules draw on history, textual analysis, and social science methods, meaning a typical week combines lectures, small-group seminars, and independent reading of primary and secondary sources. Many programmes offer a strand in Religious Education, equipping you to teach the subject at second level. Maynooth University and St Patrick's Pontifical University both have strong library and research resources, and some programmes include study-abroad opportunities through Erasmus+.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO, and most Theology or Religious Studies degrees require a minimum of six Leaving Certificate subjects including English, with points that are generally moderate in competitiveness. Higher Level English is strongly recommended, and subjects such as History, Philosophy (if available), Irish, and Religious Education are considered useful preparation. QQI/FET Level 5 or 6 awards in Humanities or Social Sciences can provide an alternative progression route for applicants without standard Leaving Certificate results. Mature students aged 23 or over may apply directly and are assessed through interview and personal statement. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available at participating institutions for applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified Religious Education teachers at second level in Ireland remains steady, and the Teaching Council requires graduates to complete the PME before entering the profession. Chaplaincy roles in hospitals, universities, and prisons are funded primarily through the HSE and the Irish Prison Service, offering stable if competitive pathways. Graduates with strong analytical and communication skills are increasingly valued in the non-profit, public affairs, and interfaith dialogue sectors. The breadth of transferable skills developed means theology graduates enter a wide range of graduate employment.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools such as large language models are beginning to assist researchers in analysing large bodies of religious texts, cross-referencing scriptural sources, and translating historical documents, speeding up work that previously took considerable time. However, the interpretive, ethical, and pastoral dimensions of theology rely on human judgement, empathy, and community engagement that AI cannot replicate. You will need to develop strong critical thinking skills to evaluate AI-generated summaries of complex theological arguments for accuracy and nuance. Overall, AI is likely to be a research aid rather than a disruptive force in this field.
